Hooray! I’m not sleeping

by Reece

Hooray!

Enjoy this Ben Wagner (aka Hooray!) take on Memoryhouse’  Lately (Deuxième). If you thought you couldn’t bring across that feeling of being alone any more than the original try this on for size. For one, the opening half a minute is pure wind blowing before being brought back to Jon Brion’s familiar Phone Call melody. The sub of this mix [no memory] illustrates the ominous layers Wagner has drizzled over the original; Denise’ vocals are so far gone they sound like they’re lost in a maze of reverby-synthesiser calmness.

“Lately my heart’s been breaking – my heart’s been breaking through the seem”

Ooooh can you hear the Wind Blow?

by Reece

Yukon Blonde

Yukon Blonde deliver this stellar piece, and if the story was just a but more elaborate it could be another indie harmony anthem in the likes of Fleet Foxes and to a lesser extent Library Voices. As it stands now Jeff, Brandon, and Graham leave you wanting more (which for me means repeat for my entire trip to work and back). The harmonies are wonderful though and the not one of the guys is drowning out the other with their vocals or their instruments. A very tight production which feels like one of those end-of-movie run to the airport terminal tracks; warm and fuzzy.

“Into the halls, the house of my mind. Into the rooms, the wandering eye. Waited it out, I waited it out. I was alone – the window of mine”

Don’t, honestly it’ll only get you down

by Reece

Deep Sea Arcade

So I thought I’d give my fellow aussies Deep Sea Arcade some a-life lovin’. They’ve been getting a lot of air-play on JJJ for their single Lonely In Your Arms (Brilliant video!) which is just as poppy & catchy. This here is a solid effort though, I don’t know if it’s the church alter acoustics, the forefront tambourine or the unwavering drum rhythm ala (sp?) Ringo that makes these guys sound very Beatles in this recording – but I like it.

And I’m trying out Soundcloud instead of FileDen with this track – see how this goes.

Holy shit NEW //CIVIL//CIVIC

by Reece

CIVIL CIVIC

Hold onto your fucking mind and prepare to be BLOWN AWAY by this – NEW CIVIL CIVIC! Ben & Aaron have done it again. Let me try and set the scene. You’re called out to a death-match set in the plane between dreams and reality where you have to defeat the devil himself with a guitar made entirely from lazers (I’m understating). And all you’re wearing is a flight cap and a cellophane g-string. That’s the feeling you get when you press play on Fuck Youth. Their twin brother release Run Overdrive is a little more reserved, you have time to gather your thoughts before the sonic onslaught – but only for a second. This needs to be listened to at pace – you can’t sit back with this one kids. Go get ‘em – Go NOW!

Another hung Philly Jay

Philadelphia Grand Jury

Welcome, welcome to the blog my Aussie-based brethren The Philadelphia Grand Jury. The boys from left to right are Calvin, Berkfinger, and MC Bad Genius – true story. And this is their most played track over the alternative airways of JJJ. It’s a pop-punk\piano-rock\power-piece which leaves that sweet ‘aww shucks’ feeling in your tummy upon listening. At its core its a get down and boogie opener to any live set and for this reason you should listen. Coz everyone could use a bit more boogie in their lives.

Like… you know

by Reece

The Like

We’re all a bit incestuous. True story. Or at least we are according to the gorgeous four LA ladies who make up The Like.  This off their Release Me album – the girls at the moment touring the states + Toronto being received well. This is catchy, as much as I can’t stand all girl ‘spoken’ harmonies, this is still pulled off and although it might not be the next indie anthem – I could see it played out on whatever teen soapy is being spun these-days. The OC right? Get it

Time after time M.I.A. does it

by Reece

M.I.A.Seems like you can’t get away from this song at the moment.

It’s all been said before, it’s less edgy, more POP, what’s the statement. If you’re just after a fun track to spare the head mess than this is yours to dance to. Now forget the parody and hit

Ra Ra Riot

Absolutely adore what Absofacto’s done with this mix of Ra Ra Riot’s Each Year. The bass, the tempo, the focus on Miles’ vocals – it’s beautiful. Make the time

Small Black

Soapy-electro juice coats this take from Brooklyn-based Small Black. Like finishing late on Friday, stepping out and tripping over a couple making out on the curb – a little annoying, kinda cute and a little bit lonely. And if you got through reading that trite you deserve
